Thank Teens for Dank Memes: _____ on the _____

Each week, Social Strategist Roze Pirvany finds the dankest of all current memes, investigates its origins and relevance to online culture, and shares her findings to the agency in a feature called Thank Teens For Dank Memes.

Now, we’re sharing them with you…

The _____ on the _____ meme has been stretching the rhyming skills of meme-makers after gaining popularity in the past few weeks. The meme directly references Elf on the Shelf, the children’s book character and accompanying toys.

Elf on the Shelf gained its own level of notoriety in the meme world in the past, most notably by many images documenting the Elf’s questionable, and sometimes even violent, behavior.

The current meme plays on the popularity of the character by suggesting some new combination of character and place.

The memes require a bit more user consideration than the average meme, making a viewer figure out the meme themselves. Each meme has its own prerequisite pop culture knowledge required as well, though most should be easily figured out by the general public.

The recent surge in popularity has its origins on Tumblr and Reddit, though as the meme gained traction, images began popping up on Twitter. Social savvy brands, such as Denny’s, have even gotten in on the action.

It will be interesting to see the longevity of this meme, especially in the lead-up to the holiday season, where it would seem most relevant. Perhaps – like decorations and candy – the holiday memes come earlier each year.
